Silver Dollars
I am planning a series of websites built around all aspects of silver, and this is one of them. As a boy (1950's) I remember there were always a couple of old silver dollars in the buffet drawer along with our baby teeth and other treasures. I suspect they are still there.
In high school the local Baptist minister ran a Sunday afternoon collectors group for those of us in the neighborhood. He was a coin and stamp collector and encouraged us to learn, study and enjoy them too. However, when I was collecting $0.20 per week from customers on my paper route silver dollars were out of reach as a collectible. Pennies were more my style.
I still remember making one of my very first dumb trades when I mailed off some nice Indian Head pennies my dad had collected and traded them for a couple of the old large cent pennies. Nothing like trading wholesale on a popular item for retail on a less popular. Of course, it's been 45 years since I looked at any of the coins, so that may have changed too.
After registering this domain I check Ebay to see what the market looked like and was shocked to find 17,000 auctions for silver dollars. Obviously, things have changed a lot since I was collecting. As I build out my silver sites I will return here and create pages that automatically display slected categories of silver dollar auctions. I can see that Canadian coins would be one group, boullion possibly another and perhaps another for silver dollars used in jewelry and other items.
